City Views, Country Dreams

Good evening from New York.

It is now May Day Eve.  This realization reminds me how I have become a very lazy blogger.  It also reminds me that it's been grand to have been spending much more time outdoors as my winter down-filled coat has been traded in for various layers of cotton, silk and wool.

At home, on the breakfast front, Quaker Oats Old Fashioned oatmeal, prepared with raisins, a dash of cinnamon and brown sugar and milk, has been replaced by the simpler goodness of Cheerios.  Winter and summer oats promise to be kind to my cholesterol levels.  When berry season appears at the farmers market, strawberries will replace the raisins.

Over in Central Park, flowering trees have been flowering.

Daffodils have surpassed their peak blooming season.  Tulips are on display.

The blue sky days are blissful.  Even when clouds roll into town, we now know that snow won't be part of the package.

Romantic couples (memories...) and friends rent rowboats to travel the Lake in Central Park.

My Mom just celebrated her 99th birthday, and I hope that she won't mind my sharing with you all the watercolor anemone blooms I painted for her card.

On the knitting front that is always lurking around my apartment, I have begun an experiment with a new technique, Entrelac, that creates a sort of basket weave effect.  I have been following the technical advice given by Entralac.  Once you get the gist of the basic maneuvers, there are countless variations possible.  Give it a go...not that complicated.

My recovery from that February fall is almost complete.  I have participated in some more political activities and continue to communicate with my elected governmental politicians.  On a bus ride yesterday, I noticed that "stand by" barricades are still up in front of Bergdorf Goodman, located diagonally across Fifth Avenue from Trump Tower.

The NYC taxpayers continue to fund this, as the First Lady and her son still dwell in TT.

Moving along, here is a view of the current garden space that is planted just above the subway station at 72nd Street and Broadway.

On an afternoon walk today through my neighborhood, I stopped to take this picture of a classic Upper West Side brownstone building that features a well-chosen planting for its parlor floor window boxes.

Thank you all so much for visiting and leaving your comments.  I continue to also appreciate the pleasures of Instagram and invite you all to also visit me at my page there.  I also promise to continue visiting you blogging pals.

  1. Central Park looks so beautiful on a gorgeous Spring day. We were lucky at the beginning of the week here in Toronto with beautiful blue skies and warmer temps - I took the opportunity to visit High Park (about 2/3 the size of Central Park) as the Cherry Blossoms were in bloom. Viewing them is an annual event here and I was very glad to be able to visit early in the morning on a weekday. It got so crazy last Sunday that the park had to be closed and then the big restaurant, The Grenadier Cafe had to be closed! It was so much nicer on the Monday when a friend and I could stroll under the trees and really enjoy them - although by the time we left a couple of hours later cars were circling looking for parking spots and we were glad to leave and not to have to deal with it.
That new knitting technique looks amazing - but much more difficult than you are letting on.
And what a beautiful card for your mother - she is very lucky.

    1. Thank you Margie! I have heard of the Grenadier Cafe, and so from your description of the crowds surging to see the cherry blossoms have a good idea of the Surge.
Truly, check out the first pages of the Entrelac book I've given a link to, and you will soon understand the technique.
I truly appreciate your compliment on the card. xo

  3. Your spring sounds wonderful Frances. Love your card painting and the Entrelac sounds and looks fascinating. What will you make with it? A sweater or scarf? I just love the look of yours. I've had to back off from Trump. It/he makes me sick. Hope your summer days are as good as the spring.

    1. Donna, thanks for your visit and comment. I originally thought the Entrelac experiment would be a scarf, but I might end up felting it and turning it into some sort of hat. Jury is out.
I continue to stay close enough to the Trump reporting (daily Spicer press conferences, e.g.) so that I remember that this is not normal.

  4. So happy you have spring, clouds, and no snow !
Your Birthday Card for your Mum is so wonderful.
The basket weave knit is beautiful, you are so talented. I tried knitting and just couldn't move my fingers the right way. Plus the kitting teacher made fun of the way I was knitting and it was very strange.
It was my first class. I would have liked to knit for fun but my arthritic hands just can't take it now. Which in a way is good because I have so many different art projects going on I don't think I could try another.
Love your walks through the park with all the flowers.

    cheers, parsnip

  10. It is such a lovely time when trees are in blossom. I imagine that a walk in Central Park has many attractive trees to admire. The tulips remind me of an old Master painting.

    1. It's a true pleasure to watch the ways in which spring announces its arrival in the city. The folks who plan and attend to the gardens, lawns, trees, etc. in Central Park are true artists. There is just the right amount of the natural looks...like thousands of dandelions allowed to flourish. And then...the lavish displays of those amazing tulips! xo

I loved Central Park when I visited a few years ago especially the man playing his guitar by John Lennon circle. Is the building the shop in the park, I remember we went there and my grand daughter brought a bed cover for her brother who was unable to cone with us. Happy memories.

  15. I'm looking forward to berry and peach season too. Good cereal toppings! But my breakfast isn't as healthy as yours, since I really like the Honey Nut variety of Cheerios. It must be so wonderful to walk around NYC under blue sky unencumbered by winter clothes. I have now shed my hiking boots with the cleats attached for much more comfortable walking shoes. Glad to have snow-free trails!
And that little painting! Lucky mom.

  18. How delightful to catch up with your NY in the spring and to know that you are firing on all cylinders again. Gorgeous anemones for your mother and such clever knitting. I have just finished knitting a jacket in garter stitch which was enough of a challenge especially when sewing together. I had to undo it twice! I just hope that when the small recipient gets back she won't have grown out of it!

    1. So good to hear from you, Lucille. Thank you so much for the kind words.
I actually think that knitting in garter stitch really requires a knitter to be quite precise for the results to be pleasing. And the yarn choice gets to be pretty important, too. I bet that the jacket you've finished is perfect!

  19. Nothing better than Cheerios in the morning, I've never outgrown them. That Knitting style is just fabulous, you are a painter in wool. Instagram is challenging me, I still have not figured out how to use it from my laptop and haven't the initiative to watch tutorials. I do think facebook and instagram are ousting blogging a bit, so I am always happy that some of us are still hanging on in the blog zone.

    1. Wonderful news ...you are also a Cheerios fan! I didn't sign on to Instagram until after I'd purchased a smartphone. I guess when I investigated how to use it via the laptop it just seemed too "un-instant." I do, however, like to view IG posts via the laptop...seeing the photos in a larger format is pleasant.
      I will still blog. xo
